Sit IBAIC L1 first. L1, the Certified AI Practitioner exam, has no prerequisites and covers the basics every AI user needs. Each L2 specialist credential lists L1 as its prerequisite, with a challenge-exam route described on each credential page. L2 also asks for more: an exam plus a practical task or portfolio in a specific role.
This article compares the two levels using the details IBAIC publishes on ibaic.org, and helps you decide which L2 track, if any, to aim for after L1. It does not cover study plans; for that, see How to prepare for IBAIC L1 in six weeks.
What is the difference between IBAIC L1 and L2?
L1 certifies that you can use AI well in everyday work. L2 certifies that you can do a specific AI-related role, such as workflow automation or marketing, to a professional standard.
IBAIC describes its levels like this on the certifications page:
- L1 Practitioner is “the entry certification, for anyone who uses AI systems in their professional work.”
- L2 Specialist covers “specialist roles: workflow automation, quality assurance, data, marketing and product. Each is its own certification.”
Within a level, IBAIC says the credentials are peers that differ in subject, not in rank.
How do L1 and L2 compare side by side?
L1 is a single online exam that anyone can sit. L2 is a set of role-based credentials with a longer assessment, a higher fee and an L1 prerequisite.
The table below summarises the details IBAIC published as of November 2026. IBAIC marks some L2 specifications as provisional, so check the credential page before you book.
| Feature | L1 Practitioner | L2 Specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | One: Certified AI Practitioner | Five: AI Product Manager, AI Workflow Automation Specialist, AI Quality Assurance Specialist, AI Data Specialist, AI Marketing Specialist |
| Who it is for | People who use AI systems in their day-to-day work | People in a specific AI-related role |
| Prerequisite | None | L1 Certified AI Practitioner, or the challenge route described on each credential page |
| Assessment | Online exam | Exam plus a 7-day practical task (four credentials); portfolio and professional discussion (Product Manager) |
| Exam size | 60 items, 90 minutes | 45 items, 120 minutes on the exam-based credentials |
| Proctoring | Online, record-and-review, government photo ID check | Same for the exam component |
| Fee paid to IBAIC | USD 99 per attempt | USD 299 per attempt |
| Recertification | Every 3 years: 20 CPD points in the cycle, or re-sit | Set on each credential page |
Fees come from IBAIC’s fees page. They are paid to IBAIC in US dollars and are separate from any training fee. IBAIC states that it does not deliver training.
Do you need L1 before you can sit L2?
In most cases, yes. Each L2 credential page lists L1 Certified AI Practitioner as the prerequisite.
There is a challenge route. The Workflow Automation, Quality Assurance, Data and Marketing pages say you need L1 “or a pass in the L1 challenge exam” before you sit. The Product Manager page limits the challenge route to candidates with five years’ documented product, business-analysis or solution-consulting experience. IBAIC does not describe the challenge exam’s format or fee on these pages, so ask IBAIC directly if you are considering it.
For most people, especially students and freshers, the simple path is L1 first.
Why do I recommend L1 first, even for experienced professionals?
Because L2 assumes the L1 skills are already in place. The L2 practical tasks ask you to design and defend real work, and that is much harder if your prompting, checking and data habits are still shaky.
There are practical reasons too:
- L1 is shorter and cheaper. One online exam, one fee. It is a lower-risk first step.
- L1 shows you how IBAIC assesses. You learn the booking process, the proctoring and the rules before the stakes go up.
- L1 skills carry into L2. The Marketing Specialist blueprint, for example, includes Evaluation & Assurance, Data & Information and Security again, at the L2 Applied level.
- You may change your mind about the track. Once you have used AI across more of your work, a different L2 role may turn out to fit you better.
Which L2 track fits your job?
Pick the track closest to the work you already do or want to do next. IBAIC describes each one on its credential page:
| L2 credential | IBAIC says it is for |
|---|---|
| Certified AI Product Manager | People who decide what an AI feature should do, without building it themselves |
| Certified AI Workflow Automation Specialist | People who redesign how work moves through an organisation once AI is part of it |
| Certified AI Quality Assurance Specialist | People responsible for testing software that contains AI |
| Certified AI Data Specialist | People who connect AI systems to the documents and data an organisation already holds |
| Certified AI Marketing Specialist | People who run marketing content production with AI in the loop |
The practical tasks reflect these roles. For example, the Marketing Specialist task gives you a brand guide, a campaign objective and the channels it must run on, and asks you to submit a content pipeline design, sample output with your review record, a measurement plan and a statement of disclosure obligations within seven days. You need real work experience to do that well.
Where does L3 fit in?
L3 is for building with AI, not for most first-time candidates. IBAIC describes it as “building with AI: your own agents, how AI works inside, and solution architecture.”
According to the certifications page, the L3 Agent Developer and Engineer credentials require L1, and the L3 Solutions Architect credential requires any L2 credential. If L3 is your long-term goal, L1 is still the first step.
So which one should you sit first?
For almost everyone, L1. The only exception is an experienced professional who qualifies for, and prefers, the challenge route to a specific L2 credential.
| Your situation | Sit first |
|---|---|
| Student or fresher | L1 |
| Working professional, new to AI tools | L1 |
| Working professional, using AI daily | L1, then the L2 track that matches your role |
| Experienced professional considering the challenge route | Read the L2 credential page and confirm the route with IBAIC first |
